Sony’s Thoughts: Learning to pray

Posted in: Sony's Devotionals — Sony @ 8:53 am

I first heard the song “Walk With Me” (the one which Ernie Haase and some other tenors sing) a few years ago and thought it was a great song. Recently, I was listening to it again and began to try to learn the lyrics. I used to be so good at learning lyrics but, although it takes me longer now, there are occasionally still songs which hit me that I will play over and over until I finally get them down.

As I was learning this particular song, the words jumped out at me: “Let me learn to pray as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.” Wow. I wonder what answers we would get to our prayers if we learned to pray with the fervency and depth that Jesus prayed with as He neared the most cruel execution anyone could receive. I wonder how many we want to see saved or healed badly enough that we would pray all night if need be, to intercede for them instead of watching our favorite TV programs, to cry out to God on their behalf, not worrying about how silly we look. God is a merciful God but Scripture says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” How many times are we praying just because we know we should yet we’re not full of the faith we need to fervently intercede?

Lord, teach us how to truly pray and help us to be willing to deny ourselves and to receive a genuine burden for others who desperately need a touch from You!
