Singling the Right Song

Posted in: Radio — Daniel J. Mount @ 7:48 am

Two years ago, give or take a month or so, the Collingsworths released their last studio project, We Still Believe. It closed with a ballad penned by Rebecca Peck called “Blessed Be the Lamb.”

Now to rewind the clock a little, this was, I think, a little before the Collingsworths started doing Gaither dates. I was of the opinion at the time that they had the talent, beyond question, to be one of Southern Gospel’s biggest groups, but they were three minutes away from the top. In other words, they needed a good radio song that people would associate with the group.

As soon as I heard “Blessed Be the Lamb,” I thought, for the first time when hearing one of their songs, “This could be the one!” It is a well-penned and well-arranged ballad that fits their group perfectly.

This month, they are finally sending it to radio. So we shall see if I was right.

Song of a Lifetime: Unique Promotion Idea

Posted in: News — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:50 am

Over the weekend, I got an interesting email with an interesting proposition from Greg Coghill. He works with songwriter Phil Cross, and said:

Phil Cross is going to start booking some of his weekends a little different.  We are looking for writers who would like to have Phil come spend one or two days writing with them in exchange for the writer booking Phil in their area that Sat. and Sunday.  It is a great opportunity for writers just starting out as well as more experienced writers.

Interested writers can contact him at philcrossmusic@embarqmail.com.

Dates on Prophets Quartet recordings

Posted in: Other — Daniel J. Mount @ 12:49 pm

I have a number of projects in my collection for which I don’t know years of release. Does anyone know what years these Prophets projects were released?

  • I Know
  • If We Never Meet Again
  • Just A Rose Will Do
  • A New Day
  • Peace In the Valley
  • Prophets
  • Victory in Jesus
  • Sweeter As the Days Go By (I have a date of ca. 1968 for that one)

Any information on personnel on these projects would also be appreciated. Thank you!

CD Review: Everyday (Triumphant Quartet)

Posted in: 5 star, CD Reviews — Daniel J. Mount @ 9:00 am

tq_cd_everydayRating: 5 stars (of 5)

Average song rating: 4.4 stars (of 5)

Song List: Jesus Built This Church on Love; Everyday; Somebody Died For Me; Amazed at the Change; Do You Know that You Know?; When the Trumpet Sounds; One Drop of Blood; God’s Home; What a Wonderful Day; The Day of the Lord.

Available From: Artist.

* * *

Triumphant Quartet has kept the same lineup and same style long enough that they don’t have to be concerned about whether their fans will like their new releases. This gives them a freedom in song selection and placement on a CD that groups introducing a new member or more progressive style don’t have; while such groups frequently start a CD with its strongest or second-strongest song, Triumphant Quartet doesn’t have to do that. On Everyday, the project’s four strongest songs are all in the second half of the project. It’s not that the project really has a single weak song; I rate every song on this project a four or five of five stars, something I rarely do even with my highest rated CDs of a given year. On Everyday, Triumphant is able to start with strong songs but build with stronger songs to an impressive finish.

The project starts with two covers, “Jesus Built This Church on Love” (Hemphills) and “Everyday” (Oak Ridge Boys). “Somebody Died for Me” is a ballad with a patriotic /miltary hook.

“Amazed at the Change” was penned by Rodney Griffin, and originally pitched to the group for their previous project. When they didn’t record it on that project, he pitched it to other groups; it was picked up by Liberty Quartet as the title track for their most recent project, Amazed (reviewed here). Then, when Triumphant was selecting songs for this project, they returned to this song and picked it up. The renditions are fairly similar; Liberty Quartet’s rendition has a more easy swing feel, while Triumphant’s has a slightly more produced feel, with some nice harmony arrangements on the final chorus.

“Do You Know that You Know” is songwriter / baritone Scotty Inman’s contribution to the project. This makes this the third “Know” song Daywind artists have released in the past 7 or 8 months, following “I Know that I Know,” cut originally by the Mark Trammell Trio and then Legacy Five, and Greater Vision’s “I Want You to Know That You Know.” Triumphant had already cut tracks for this song before they heard the other group’s cuts; however, it might not have been a bad idea for Daywind execs to suggest that the group held it till their next project.

It has nothing to do with the quality of the song—it’s a great song, and I disagree with David Bruce Murray’s description of the song as repetitive. Yes, the title is repeated twice at the end of the chorus, but that doesn’t make it any more repetitive than, say, “The Blind Man Saw it All.”

The second half of the project is filled with excellent songs. David Sutton is featured on a cover of the Joe Moscheo tune “What a Wonderful Day.”  And there are a trio of songs that really should get sent to radio: Wayne Haun’s “When the Trumpet Sounds” is a great uptempo song that really should get sent to radio. The same can be said for two other songs on the project, “One Drop of Blood,” a ballad penned by Jerry Goff that features bass singer Eric Bennett, and the project’s closing song, “The Day of Our Lord,” a ballad penned by Paula Stefanovich (author of “Jerusalem,” “Yaweh,” and “Gospel to the World”) that moves along in a fairly uptempo 6/8 time.

“The Day of the Lord” has one recording oddity I haven’t quite figured out. At least the Daywind pre-release I got has a series of fairly loud beeps (eleven, to be precise) at the end of the bridge, before the transition to the clip from “The King is Coming.” Does anyone know if these made it into the final release, and if they were intentional?

The longer Triumphant can maintain this lineup, and level of song selection and production quality, the more of a lasting mark they will make on this genre. The groups that have the strongest following decades later – the groups from the 60s and 70s that people are still talking about – are the groups that pulled this off.

Three consecutive #1s

Posted in: Radio — Daniel J. Mount @ 8:48 am

An interesting little tidbit for the day: Songwriter Rusty Golden, whom I interviewed here, has had three songs he’s written or co-written singled to Southern Gospel Radio. “John in the Jordan” (Signature Sound) was #1 in May 2007. “What Salvation’s Done for Me” (Booth Brothers) is #1 on the April 2009 chart, and I’ve heard that “I Want to Thank You” (Karen Peck and New River) is going to be #1 in May 2009. So his first three singles all went to #1. Not bad!

Ball Brothers sign with Song Garden

Posted in: Commentary, News — Daniel J. Mount @ 7:13 am

Yesterday evening, the Ball Brothers sent out a press release announcing that they have signed their first major-label deal, an exclusive recording agreement with Song Garden Music. They will be working with producers Jason Webb and Darren Rust to produce their debut Song Garden CD, Breakthrough. The CD is scheduled to be released on July 7.

The Ball Brothers were introduced to Southern Gospel by touring as Ernie Haase & Signature Sound’s opening act; since that time, they have toured solo for several years. They are in the top ten nominees for Horizon Group in the 2009 Singing News Fan Awards.

Equally interesting to me is what this means for the Song Garden label. They got off to a fairly strong start, signing the Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet, the Chuck Wagon Gang, and a couple of other fairly well-known artists. But after Robbie Hiner and Nick Bruno, the two public faces of the label, left, the label went under the radar screen for several years. But during the last few months, the Chuck Wagon Gang has prepared to release their first label project in several years, and label has signed Roy Webb and the Ball Brothers. They’re no Daywind yet, but it looks like they’re solidly back on the map.

iTunes song game

Posted in: Humor — Daniel J. Mount @ 7:17 am

I don’t have any serious posts in mind for the day, and I after a skim around Southern Gospel’s part of the web, I don’t see any stories of note either. So let’s take a break from serious posts and do something entirely off the wall.

This is an idea I got from Adam Edwards on Facebook, and the funny thing is…a few actually made sense!

The rules are pretty simple:

  1. Put your mp3 player (iTunes, Windows Media Player, iPod, etc.) on shuffle / random.
  2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
  3. Write down that song name, no matter how silly it sounds.

  • Favorite Musician – Jeff Stice (Triumphant Quartet)

  • Faith Award: Judy Brannin (This is a lifetime achievment award, comparable to the Singing News’ Norcross-Templeton award.)

For an awards presentation based on an online poll, it seems to be a pretty accurate snapshot of current fan favorite groups. There don’t seem to be too many instances where an artist’s e-blast to their supporters unduly influenced the final choices.

Sony’s Thoughts: Don’t Forget the God Who Saved You

Posted in: Sony's Devotionals — Sony @ 10:02 am

I am currently in the process of reading through the book of Ezekiel and this past week, I read chapter 16.  Space prohibits me from quoting the whole thing but, in essence, God is talking to a nation which has forsaken Him.  When this city was born, it was unloved and forgotten, left by the wayside to die. God in His mercy passed by it, picked it up, clothed it, and loved it to the point that it flourished and became extremely wealthy. Instead of gratitude welling up in this city, the city rejected God. It sacrificed its children to idols and committed terrible sins against the very One who had been so loving and kind and who made it what it had become.

As I read that chapter, I asked God to check my heart. I remember the rubble I was in when God found me; I’m very aware that I am what I am today because of Him; but I don’t want to be found guilty of forsaking Him and taking for granted what He’s given me–a life of peace and joy, and a song to sing.

Thank You, Lord, for your mercy and for saving me from myself. Help me to serve You with every breath You give me.
