CD Review: “A Blackwood Homecoming” (Blackwood Singers)

Posted in: CD Reviews — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:00 am

Yesterday, in my review of the Blackwood Quartet’s The Way it Used to Be, I explained the history of the various Blackwood Groups. Today’s review is of A Blackwood Homecoming. The project was produced by R.W. Blackwood Jr. and Ron Blackwood of the Blackwood Singers, and Terry Blackwood. It features 17 tracks and is an expanded version of the original release. (The original release is available from Terry Blackwood’s site here and only has ten tracks.)

The project contains both new tracks and older recordings. It has vocals from the Blackwood Singers members, the Blackwood Quartet, Terry Blackwood, James Blackwood, Jimmy Blackwood, Andrea Blackwood Carter, and Kay Blackwood DeWitt. Yet despite the mix of tracks and vocalists, the recording’s sound quality is surprisingly consistent.

This sonic consistency is achieved in large part by overdubbing vocals of from various Blackwoods onto the older tracks. Most of the tracks feature a mixed group of voices, something that come as a surprise to both male quartet and mixed group fans.

However, male quartet fans need not write off the project. Four tracks on the project feature the voices from the current Blackwood Quartet–John Rulapaugh (tenor), R.W. Blackwood (lead), Ron Blackwood (baritone), and Rick Fair (bass). These songs–”Someone to Care,” “Feelin’ Mighty Fine,” “Rolling Riding Rocking,” and “How Big is God”–are some of the strongest tracks on the project, and should particularly delight all fans of John Rulapaugh during his Dove Brothers and Palmetto State Quartet days.

Rick Fair toured with Rulapaugh in the Palmetto State Quartet, singing baritone at the time. He has now moved to the bass position with this quartet. He is featured on “How Big is God” (as well as singing a few lines on “Someone to Care.”) Though his range is not as low as many other Southern Gospel bass singer, he has developed an enjoyable tone and fits well in the bass position.

Overall, I decided to give the project a rating of “Enjoyable.” But the tracks from the current Blackwood Quartet suggest that a full recording of this caliber would delight fans of classic quartet singing, and stand a strong chance of capturing a “Recommended” (or perhaps even “Highly Recommended”) rating here.

Available from: Good question. It’s available from The Blackwoods, but isn’t on their website.

Rating: Enjoyable (with several tracks Highly Recommended).

CD Review: “The Way it Used to Be” (Blackwood Quartet)

Posted in: CD Reviews — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:00 am

2008bqwayitusedtobe.jpgThis project is the most recent complete recording from the Blackwood Quartet. It is actually several years old, but just came to my attention when it was added to Springside’s newly available titles. (A newer project with several tracks from the current lineup is scheduled to be reviewed tomorrow.)

Since there are several groups with the Blackwood name, it seems every review of a Blackwood project needs to be prefaced with an explanation of just which Blackwood group it is. There are three major Blackwood groups today; Jimmy Blackwood, son of James Blackwood, runs the Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Mark Blackwood, son of Cecil Blackwood, runs the Blackwood Gospel Quartet. The Blackwood Quartet (the group being reviewed) and Blackwood Singers are run by Ron and R.W. Blackwood, sons of the R.W. Blackwood.

Ron and R.W. Blackwood perform with their wives as the Blackwood Singers, a mixed group. They also hire a tenor and bass–for this project, Steve Warren and Paul Hyde–and perform some numbers as the Blackwood Quartet. (Mike LoPrinzi apparently also sang some baritone tracks on the project.)

This project features nineteen Southern Gospel classics. The project is produced in a fairly simple, piano-and-vocals style. Though the session pianist is not credited, he (or she) is a master at this style of accompaniment, doing enough fills and runs that it didn’t actually register that piano was the only accompaniment until my third or fourth listen through the project.

Fans of Steve Warren should especially like this project, as he is featured on numerous tracks, most memorably “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “He Hideth My Soul,” and “It is Well With My Soul.”

Although Paul Hyde may never have become one of the most recognized names in Southern Gospel, his bass tone is well-rounded and his range is wide. His range is particularly showcased on “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Fans of classic piano-and-vocals Southern Gospel quartet singing will particularly enjoy this project.

Available from: Springside.

Rating: Enjoyable.

Old Paths promotion ends

Posted in: Other — Daniel J. Mount @ 9:00 pm

The Old Paths’s free download promotion has ended.  Sound clips from each of the songs can still be played on their website, where copies of their recent projects can also be purchased.

I would like to thank Jeremy Peace and the rest of The Old Paths for suggesting and helping me set this promotion up. It was one of the most innovative ways I’ve seen a group introduce themselves and make new fans, such as this one and, may I add, this one.

Concert Review: Collingsworth Family

Posted in: Concerts, Photos — Daniel J. Mount @ 7:03 am

The Collingsworth FamilyLast Saturday, I had the chance to see the Collingsworth Family in Bucyrus, Ohio. The attendance was remarkably strong for a Southern Gospel concert in this area. The host church included it as part of an annual celebration weekend; while that helped attendance, it was still heartening to see perhaps 600 or more turn out for a Southern Gospel concert. Shortly before the concert, ushers started putting out extra chairs in front of the first row, behind the back row, and (raising a retractable wall) even out into the lobby. Even so, people were standing behind the last rows throughout the concert.

Song list with comments:

  • Not the Same. This song, from their most recent project (We Still Believe), was performed by the whole family. It features Brooklyn Collingsworth, the oldest daughter and the group’s soprano.
  • When God Whispers. This song was performed by a ladies’ trio consisting of Kim Collingsworth (mother/alto), Courtney (second oldest/second soprano or mezzo), and Brooklyn.
  • God Can Do Anything. The whole family came back for this song, featuring Kim (vocal solo).
  • Kim CollingsworthIt is Well With My Soul. This was Kim’s first piano solo of the night, and got a standing ovation.
  • The Blood of Jesus. This was performed by a mixed trio–Phil Collingsworth (father/baritone), Kim, and Brooklyn.
  • I Can Trust Jesus. This was performed by a mixed trio with a different lineup, Courtney joining Phil and Brooklyn (while Kim played piano).
  • Joshua Fit the Battle. This was Kim’s second piano solo (and second standing ovation) of the night. Interestingly enough, Phil Collingsworth introduced it by saying that it was their most requested song over the course of their ministry. I found this slightly surprising, since I would have expected “How Great Thou Art” to be her most-requested song.
  • Lily of the Valley. This was a fiddle duet featuring Courtney and Brooklyn. More than any other song except Kim’s piano solos, this got the most enthusiastic response of the evening. It was encored once, and a second wouldn’t have hurt.
  • No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus. Brooklyn and Courtney played this as a violin duet.
  • We Still Believe. This Ronnie Hinson song, the title song from their most recent project, featured the whole family. It was well received enough to be encored twice.
  • Olivia CollingsworthMy Favorite Things. This song featured Olivia, the youngest Collingsworth, on a solo. The first verse stayed true to the original, from The Sound of Music; the second and third verses were parodies of the original, listing things old people enjoy. (Judging by the looks on the faces of various older audience members, the message of the song was hitting home.smiley)
  • And Can it Be / Majesty / In the Garden. In preparation for her upcoming live piano video taping, in which she will be taking requests, Kim took several requests. The first several audience requests were for “How Great Thou Art.” Phil noted the requests, and (as I guessed) saved that one to close the request time. Audience members also requested “And Can it Be,” “Majesty,” “Salute to the Troops,” and several others, and Kim worked several of the requests into an impromptu medley. She closed the medley with an audience sing-along on “In the Garden.”
  • How Great Thou Art. Kim closed the concert with this number and received a (prolonged) standing ovation.

The Collingsworth Family appears on selected dates on the Gaither Homecoming tour. It seems most groups on the tour find ways to work in at least one Gaither joke during the course of their programs. Phil’s Gaither joke was one of the most original I’ve heard, tying it into the introduction of “My Favorite Things,” mentioning how the second and third verses listed some of Gaither’s favorite things.

With six family members, most of whom play instruments, the evening was full of variety. With one or two exceptions (in the instrumentals), there were no two consecutive songs done by the same lineup. This makes comparing a Collingsworth Family concert to a regular Southern Gospel concert something like comparing oranges to apples. To extend the metaphor (well, technically a simile, but who’s keeping score?), don’t go to one of their concerts expecting an apple–but you might just find the orange tastier than you expected.

New Southern Gospel group announced

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 10:08 am

Several former members of Mercy’s Mark Quartet–lead singer Josh Feemster, bass Chris West, and tenor Brent Mitchell–will be forming a new (yet to be named) group. The baritone position will be filled by Chris’s brother Craig.

Their debut concert will be Friday, May 9, at the First Baptist Church in Oneonta, Alabama.

EDIT (12:38 PM): It looks like Brent Mitchell won’t be a member of the group. He will just be appearing for that one date.

More Details on GVB Reunion

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:24 am

Over the past few days, more details have been mentioned about the upcoming Gaither Vocal Band Reunion taping. Wes Hampton posted on his blog that it would be a closed taping:

I know there’s been speculation on all of this, but I do know that it will be a closed taping. I’m anxious to see what Bill has up his sleeve. I know that he’ll make it a very memorable, fun, exciting time for everyone involved, and I’m so glad to have the amazing opportunity to be involved in this…it is quite humbling, actually. I know that folks, especially the hard core GVB fans (like myself), will be in line to get this video when it’s released.

In an interview for the Lakeland, FL Ledger, Bill Gaither also mentioned one other crucial detail:

“This summer, we’re going to record a Vocal Band reunion video. We’ll get 15 alumni of the band to reminisce and sing,” he said.

Among those alumni are singers who have had their own successful careers, like Mark Lowry, David Phelps and Russ Taff. Gaither allowed himself to guess what the alums of the band might say of its continuing success.

“There’s a lot of pride in all that. I think they’d say it’s good to see the old man is trying to keep the quality up,” he said.

What Gaither didn’t say is which fifteen alumni will be present, or whether that number includes the four present members.

Dallas Rogers joins Cross 4 Crowns

Posted in: Changes — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:40 am

A few weeks ago, we noticed a concert report that former Dixie Echoes tenor Dallas Rogers was now singing with Cross 4 Crowns quartet. That attracted enough information that I think it’s worth posting the official press release, distributed last night:

Cross 4 Crowns manager, David Hoskins, is pleased to announce the addition of Dallas Rogers as tenor for the group. Dallas is no stranger to gospel music fans having spent the past number of years with The Dixie Echoes.

Allen Leath, owner of Cross 4 Crowns, states “We are incredibly blessed to have Dallas as part of the Cross 4 Crowns family.  We were already brothers in Christ, but to be able to stand and sing His praises together is truly a privilege.  Aside from being one of southern gospel’s finest tenors, the only thing we’ve found, that supercedes his talent, is his love for The Lord.  We look forward to many years of serving God together.”

Dallas states “I’m truly excited to be a part of Cross 4 Crowns.  First of all, I want to thank my wife Shelly and my little girl Rebecca for allowing me to do what God has called me to do and that’s to sing and minister through song, I love you both.  Each one of the guys in the group is phenomenally talented.  The main focus for what we do is to minister and win lost souls for the Kingdom of Heaven.  That’s our purpose and goal in life.  If we can reach one soul, it will make every mile that we travel worth it.  God has already opened up several doors for the group, and I’m excited to see what He has in store for us.”

Cross 4 Crowns just released the first single “I’m Going There” from their soon to be released project “Turning Point”.  It is already getting very heavy airplay across the country. You can visit their web site at www.cross4crowns.com.
