Censoring Blogs

Posted in: Other — Daniel J. Mount @ 1:21 pm

I’ve been on the American Family Association / BSafe Filter for about two years–about as long as I’ve been online.

Yesterday, I found that they had blocked my blog as “News Cults.” They had blocked David Bruce Murray’s under the same reasoning. I understand they have decided to start censoring all blogs.

I just post this as a warning; if you are looking at a filter and want to be able to continue reading this blog, either find another filter or find a version that has an override.

An Interview with Matt Felts

After several days of delays–including an annoying problem with my Internet filter (the AFA Filter) blocking my own website–here is the Matt Felts interview.

Enjoy!

Canaan Update

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 4:26 pm

Since I don’t have the time to get the Matt Felts interview up, I thought I’d just post one interesting tidbit I picked up at the CBA (Christian Booksellers Association) convention.

I talked with a representative of Word Entertainment about the future of their Canaan Records label. He said that other than the Hoppers’ The Ride project, Southern Gospel fans can be looking for compilations of songs from popular groups in Canaan’s old days.

While I know that record labels often don’t talk about this in advance, I decided to go out on a limb and ask whether they were in talks with any other artist. They said that they were not–that they would just focus on promoting The Ride and their old compilations.

I also asked whether there was any chance they could release some of their back catalog as digital downloads. The Word/Canaan representative said that it was quite unlikely, though not necessarily impossible–but definitely not a priority for them.

I’m going to be out of town the next few days. I’ll be in Atlanta, and I’m looking forward to meeting a couple regular readers of this blog for the first time.

Be watching for an interview with Matt Felts of the Monument Quartet come Thursday!

International Interest in Southern Gospel

My host for this website has a way of tracking which country a request for the website to be loaded comes from. (Don’t worry, none of the information is personally identifiable.)

Here’s the hard data. It’s visits since the website started, though I might add that most of the data comes from this year (only three countries on the list–the last three–had visitors in 2006 only).

That got me to thinking. If any of my non-US readers are willing to comment, I have a few questions I’d love to have the opportunity to ask:

  • What is Southern Gospel like in your country?
  • How do you keep up to date on Southern Gospel news?
  • How do purchase Southern Gospel music?
  • Have Southern Gospel groups ever come to your area?
  • Is there any local Southern Gospel scene?
  • Does your church sing Southern Gospel music?

I know there is some local/regional Southern Gospel scene in Canada, but I was particularly surprised to see that Japan led the list of foreign visits.

The slick Southern gospel slants of…

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:11 am

I couldn’t help but notice the rather eccentric wording in this mlive.com concert listing:

The slick Southern gospel slants of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound take the stage at 6 p.m. Saturday in Sunshine Community Church, 3300 East Beltline Ave. NE. The group, founded by Haase (a former member of the Cathedrals) features an up-tempo style, as noted in the title track of its latest release, “Get Away, Jordan.” The group performed in Van Andel Arena in May as part of the Gaither Homecoming concert. Reserved seat tickets are $20 and are available in advance at itickets.com, by calling (800) 965-9324, or at the door.

“The slick Southern gospel slants of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound”…sounds like a copywriter was bored and figured he could do whatever he wanted since nobody would actually read it anyhow!

CD Review: “The Real Deal” (The Couriers)

Posted in: CD Reviews — Daniel J. Mount @ 3:32 pm

Couriers - Doing it RightRating: **** (Very Good)

Song List: I’ll Be Ready; Where Is God?; Someday; He Paid the Debt For Me; My Heart Is Filled; He’s A Personal Savior; I’ve Found A Friend; Skies Of Blue; How Great Thou Art; I’ll Be Satisfied; I Won’t Have To Cross Jordan Alone; With A Song On My Lips.

For fans of: Greater Vision and the original Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet.

Traditional/Progressive Rating:

This is the strongest independently released trio project I’ve heard this year.

It starts with a song I’d never heard before, “I’ll Be Ready” by David Reece. Reece toured with the Harvesters and the Rangers, initially as a pianist and eventually as a baritone. Both the Harvesters and the Rangers recorded this song, but it is new to the Couriers repertoire. That a gem of this caliber could go so many years unrecorded is perhaps surprising–but proves the depth of this genre’s heritage. Those who seek will always be able to find forgotten treasures to make new again for today’s audiences.

The Couriers go to the early ’90s for the second song on the project, “Where is God.” This Kyla Rowland tune was originally recorded by Gold City in 1992 on their Pillars of Faith recording, and was also done a couple of years ago by Mercy’s Mark on their Southern Selections Vol. 2 project. It is nonetheless another song that will be new to a vast majority of their audiences.

Bass/baritone Tim Beitzel takes the solo on “Someday,” written by Lynn Swizinsky.

Another song that has been previously recorded (by the Blue Ridge Quartet on Ride That Glory Train) but will be new for most audiences is their fourth track, “He Paid the Debt for Me.”

“My Heart is Filled” features lead singer Brett Scarem and tenor Larry More. This Doris Akers tune was recorded by several groups, including the Blackwood Brothers and the Florida Boys, but has not been done for decades.

The sixth tune on the project, “He’s a Personal Savior,” is more familiar to Southern Gospel audiences, being done in recent years by the Gaither Homecoming Friends, Gold City, Legacy Five, and Palmetto State. Incidentally, it was also done by the original Couriers on their 1960s project Dave Duane and Neil. Tim Beitzel does an able job of handling both the baritone part and the bass solo lines.

Beitzel is also featured on the next song, an acapella rendition of the hymn “I’ve Found a Friend.” The hymn was also recorded by the original Couriers in 1963 (back when they were still a quartet), on their Honoring Jesus project.

Lead singer Brett Scarem wrote and is featured on the eighth song on the project, the uptempo number “Skies of Blue.”

Tim Beitzel is featured on “How Great thou Art,” which is inaccurately listed in the liner notes as being in the public domain. (It was copyrighted in 1953, renewed 1981.)

“I’ll Be Satisfied,” a classic Couriers tune written by Couriers pianist L. David Young, features Brett Scarem.

Pianist Tom Keel–who also produced the project–is featured on an instrumental version of “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone.” Since Glen Payne’s impromptu acapella vocal rendition of the song on the NQC Live 1999 project will probably never be topped, it’s not a bad idea to do it as a subdued instrumental.

The project closes with “With a Song on My Lips (and a Prayer in My Heart).” The song comes from the Blackwood Brothers’ repertoire; they recorded it in 1967 on a project named after the song. The song starts with a faux-LP introduction before breaking into CD-quality audio and modern instrumentation at the first chorus.

This project is one of the best examples I have ever seen of what a group without a great deal of new material can do by going into the archives and resurrecting forgotten gems that deserve another day in the sunlight.

I believed I promised fellow blogger John Scheideman that I would check out the Couriers someday. He promotes the classic Couriers as his favorite group, and the current Couriers as worthy successors. Now I know that his judgment–which has proven correct in so many other areas–was not misplaced here. The Couriers are currently traveling as a regional group in the northeast, far from the traditional Southern Gospel beaten path. From everything I have heard of other regional groups–some of whom are very good–the Couriers are probably among the five best regional groups in Southern Gospel today.

Gene McDonald to appear at Florida Boys’ farewell?

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 5:26 am

Yesterday’s SGN Scoops e-update included a tribute to the Florida Boys by LaShay Bankston that had the following tidbit of information:

Josh Garner and Butch Owens make up the rest of the group at tenor and bass, respectfully. Before moving over to the tenor spot left vacant by Harold Reed, Josh sang lead for the group, and at 28 years old, he is one of the best voices in Southern Gospel Music. Butch Owens joined the group when Gene McDonald left to pursue other career opportunities. Both will rejoin the group at NQC for one final stand.

It’s rather odd that my first and last times to see the Florida Boys will be on the same weekend–but at least Gene McDonald will be there! [EDIT: Hopefully-see comments]

Legacy Five on Practicing the Classics

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:00 am

In Legacy Five’s most recent e-newsletter, they answered a question from a fan, Stan Branch of Normal, Illinois, who wanted to know if the rehearsed their classic songs in case someone requested them. Their answer was unexpected:

Another thing you may be surprised to learn is that we don’t hardly ever practice the classics… you see, when an old favorite is requested or called in a concert, we really enjoy the spontaneity and nostalgic feeling that comes with just singing it from memory… you know that special feeling you get when the song starts… we feel the same way on stage. We wouldn’t want to mess that up by rehearsing it or trying to “plan” a special moment!

Hmm…now that I know that, I think I’ll request a classic at my next Legacy Five concert! :)

Official Cathedrals Website to Close

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 12:59 pm

Ernie Haase’s most recent Signature Sound newsletter included the following announcement:

Since the retirement of the Cathedral Quartet in 1999 we have continued to offer their product through their website at www.cathedralquartet.com. Due to dwindling inventory the Cathedral website will be shutting down as of November 30, 2007. (We are keeping Dads site up and running and that address is www.georgeyounceonline.com.) We sincerely appreciate your support and patronage down through the years. Once this product is gone it will no longer be available so we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity now while you still have the chance.

Thank you and God bless,
Gina Younce

While I am sorry to see it close, I can’t claim to be surprised; in fact, what surprised me was finding it still running about two years ago. I hope the last few months go well for them.
