Singing News reinstates Fan Award categories

Singing News just announced that (at the fans’ request) they will be reinstating several award categories that were omitted last year: Soloist, Trio, Mixed Group, Male Quartet, and the Marvin Norcross Award. They will be retaining an overall favorite artist category, now named the Vanguard Award.

I think this is a good move. While some fans preferred having awards in fewer categories, I think most fans liked honoring a wider variety of groups and individuals.

If Singing News wants to keep the Fan Awards within a set time limit, one move that would help would be narrowing the top ten songs down to a top five. This would take nearly a half an hour out of the show, leaving time for winners of lesser awards (who can be told in advance to keep remarks brief in the event they win) to accept the award during the program.

I think this is a very smart move. The artists work hard and deserve recognition.

Good move; I thought it was a bad idea from the beginning.

  3. Question for clarification–you mean that eliminating the categories was a bad idea from the beginning?

    I thought the same.

This makes me very happy! I was so disappointed that they removed these categories last year. I can hardly wait for this year’s award show.

  5. I don’t think we need separate awards based on group formats, however I’m glad to see that an overall award is being retained.

  6. Daniel,
I just re-read what you wrote in the last paragraph of your blog article. Do you really think having less singing and more acceptance speeches is a good thing?

I do agree that your idea would be a great way to keep the time limit under control from a purely physical, make-it-all fit mentality, but I would strongly disagree that such a move would create a more appealing evening. The songs are the variety that break up the monotony of the acceptance speeches.

  8. DBM, honestly, I enjoy the acceptance speeches…as much as the songs. I can hear all of the songs at other points during NQC, except for all-star / special lineups (which I thus consider to be highlights of the program).

I’m with DBM on this one. I love the Top 10 songs being sung. ;)
