A new Florida Boys?

Posted in: Southern Gospel News — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:07 am

Will there be a new Florida Boys, with no members from previous lineups?

That’s what Kevin Steele is reporting on the Singing News forums. He said that the lineup will be Charlie Waller (lead), Buddy Burton (baritone), Chip Cooper (bass), Joshua Pope (piano), and a to-be-announced tenor.

My personal opinion is that even if Charlie Waller can afford the name, it just wouldn’t be right to bring back the Florida Boys name so soon, if there are no previous Florida Boys members on board the bus.

I could see Josh Garner or Gene McDonald using the name Floria Boys, but anything else wouldn’t make sense.

    I agree with Paul.

    Yep, I agree.

I would guess that if Waller has anything to do with it, his show would be more of a tribute to the name and the gentlemen in the group than anything else. You know, videos, classic Fla Boys songs, old microphones….you know, like he did on the Legacy Tour with the Dove Brothers.

Don’t understand anybody’s problem with someone like Waller owning the Florida Boys name and carrying the tradition on. He is about as respectful of the old ways as anyone alive. If it is true, you can be sure that it has the former FB owners’ blessing!

[...] from a reputable that the Charlie Waller/Joshua Pope/Chip Cooper/Buddy Burton = future Florida Boys rumor does have some merit. I don’t know if it’s a done deal or not, however. [...]

Whay are the Florida Boys not including their latest bass singer, Butch Owens in their NQC appearances? It’s not his fault that they hired him just weeks before deciding to retire.

I’m not one hundred percent sure, but I think it was pretty much understood from the get go that Gene would be participating at NQC for the farewell concerts. And I can pretty much promise you that it just wasn’t announced before Gene left that the FB were going to retire…they’ve been wanting to come off the road for a while now and the opportunity presented itself. Everybody who loved the Florida Boys loved Gene. He was the FL Boys bass for a while, and so it’s only fitting that he joined them at NQC.

As for Charlie Waller buying the group. Good for him! I’m glad someone is going to carry on with it. I’m anxoius to see what he’s got up his sleeve.

I know of no one better then Charlie Waller to carry the Florida Boy’s name. Buddy Burton is from Florida. Charlie has done more for Gospel Music than anyone I know. I have been going to Concerts for 58 years.Charlie & Buddy will do a fine job with the Florida Boy’s you can be sure they will carry on the tradition. Charlie & Buddy are very respectful of the old ways of Southern Gospel Music.

I enjoyed the Florida Boys very much at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion. They have great possibilities. My best wishes to Charlie and this group.

It would be a pleasure to attended the opening, in Pigeon Forge. Good Luck with this “theatre project.” (I won’t be able to attend, however)
