Signature Sound, Triumphant pick up Grammy nominations
The 52nd annual Grammy® Awards nominees were announced earlier this week. This year’s nominations—at least the two or three of those representing Southern Gospel—made more sense than in some previous years. Southern Gospel’s nominations were led by Triumphant Quartet’s Everyday and Signature Sound’s Dream On.
Two other nominees in the best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album with ties to Southern Gospel were Jason Crabb’s eponymous solo debut project and a recording called In God’s Time by former Perrys lead singer Barry Scott and his group Second Wind. Scott also sang with the Gospel bluegrass group Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver for several years.

Who would’a thunk it… my love for southern gospel music is expanding my vocabulary.
I’m not ashamed of my writing vocabulary, but I gave up pretending to know how to pronounce English a long time ago.
Perhaps you’ve given me a good enough memory cue with this one that I can keep hold of it!
My written vocabulary is far wider than my spoken, too.
I recently discovered that the Barry Scott mentioned above is the same one that played bass guitar for Gold City between Jeff Hullender and Mark Fain.
Barry’s been on my mind a lot this week. First, I had the privilege of providing his info to you for the tribute website. Wednesday, it broke that his tenor singer, Jason Leek, was leaving to join Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. And then yesterday, the shocking news of the Grammy nomination. Funny how things go sometimes. It’s been a roller coaster week for that band, to say the least.
Isn’t this the first year in many years that Gaither Vocal Band have not picked up a nomination?
A lot of the Vocal Band’s CDs over the last decade or so were nominated, but not every year. They also haven’t released CDs on a strictly annual basis. Two years ago they didn’t have a nomination, although a Gaither Homecoming video did. The last time the Gaithers as an entity were shut out was 2006.
They got nods for Lovin’ Life (2009), Give It Away (2007), A Cappella (2004), Everything Good (2003), Back Home in Indiana (1998), Southern Classics (1994), and Homecoming (1992). Lovin’ Life and Homecoming both won the Grammy.
Gaither Homecoming albums got nods in 2008, 2002, 2000, and 1999.
I see that the Vocal Band also got Best Gospel Performance in their pre-SG days in 1985 (New Point of View) and 1984 (No Other Name But Jesus).
Should clarify that they got nominations in those years, not wins.

It is wonderful that two traditional sogo groups are representing us at the Grammy’s! Bravo to both and I’m glad Triumphant is getting some well deserved recognition.
It looks like the changing of the guard in southern gospel music with experienced hands in production working with the creativity of the relative newer artists.
Given the fondness that Jeff Stice has for Ray Charles, I would tend to think that Ray Charles would have been proud of the project by Triumphant Quartet.
