Palmetto State to appear on Oprah

According to a press release from Gospel Music Update, the Palmetto State Quartet will be appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show next Tuesday, November 24. They will be appearing as backup singers for Wynonna; her step-father, Larry Strickland, owns and sings bass for Palmetto State.
The quartet will also be backing Wynonna up on her Christmas tour, a 15 city tour this month and next. During that tour, they will have the chance to be featured on one song, the title track to their new Christmas CD, Lo and Behold.

I just have to say – That’s great. Who’s Wynonna?
“Country” singer, Wynonna Judd. I put country in quotes because theoretically, she is country. However, she sings a myriad of different genres.
I’ve never heard her music. Just heard the name, and figured she was some sort of secular singer.
(Beyond that, I don’t have to worry; I classify singers as Secular and Christian, and only bother mentally with subdividing Christian—I don’t listen to secular music, so why bother?!)
Wynnona Judd? From The Judds? Seriously? You don’t know who that is?
I’ve heard the name before, only in previous PSQ discussion.
But I’m a specialist. I care about Southern Gospel in particular and other Christian genres to some extent, and the rest I don’t listen to and don’t care about.
I might have heard or seen that name, but I couldn’t place it. I didn’t figure Daniel knew more than the above, but definitely would consider PSQ more interesting.
Hey, come to think of it – we have an old (as in 15+ years) recording on tape of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” and it might be by the Judds. It was impressive talent.
Speaking of PSQ, I noticed in The Singing News that they will be performing at the Million Dollar Elm. Anybody in that lives in NE Oklahoma knows that is a casino. What Are Your Thoughts?

Wynonna is a wonderful singer. She has great tone and and vocal chops for days. One of the finest female singers…EVER. Its hard for me to understand how anyone in this country could have missed her, or her famous duet, “The Judds”.
I only have so much time and money, and I choose to invest both in Southern Gospel.
I agree, Daniel. I do the same, nowadays, also I have a small bit of interest in secular music as well.
I enjoyed the harmonies of Naomi and Wynonna Judds when they performed as The Judds. They did a good bit of gospel music as well. However, I personally do not enjoy Wynonna as a solo singer. I appreciate her vocals, but I preferred the sound of them together as The Judds.
Can I blame it on being “only” 25, too?
But I have so much SG music on iTunes right now that I can’t even keep all of it in rotation, and I just don’t have any interest in non-gospel music.
I can’t say that you can blame it on that as I am 25 also and I know of her. Good try though! Haha!

Fact is, my reason is simple enough: I have no interest in any secular music.
I’ve heard or Wynnona sung a song she sung for Touched By An Angel (Testify To Love) and also read an article about her in a recent Gaither Magazine. But whether ppl know her or not aside, I think it’s very interesting and great that the Palmetto State Quartet will be on Oprah. Now for a confession of my own….I’ve never heard of that Quartet.
I’m sorry, that should say: “I’ve heard of Wynonna, sung…”
My main interest in them is that they’ve had a couple of fantastic bass singers come through there … Jeff Pearles and Harold Gillie. And they sang “Rainbow Avenue” …….
And their former piano player Woody Beattie (?) helped Southern Sound get a little farther up in the world, I think. I turned on AQR a while back and heard this fantastic Statesman song. I could hear Jake Hess in there, and the Big Chief sounded better than I had ever heard him. It was Southern Sound … a new album moved to my wishlist!
My interest in PSQ comes from the fact that they had an absolutely incredible lineup when I first discovered Southern Gospel in 2004—John Rulapaugh, Kerry Beatty, Tony Peace, Aaron McCune, and Andrew Ishee. And It’s Settled is one incredible CD.
I clear forgot about Aaron McCune. I my dad might have some other PSQ music, historical relics by now.
Oh. And Burman Porter was hardly shabby, either. And Wesley Smith (now of Dixie Echoes fame).

For goodness’ sakes, with 19,331 SG songs in iTunes, who needs to bother with anything else?
I only have about 2,000, and a portion of that is Primitive Quartet.

SG is my primary love, but I do occasionally enjoy listening to other genres.
Burman Porter is one of the best out there.
As it comes to PSQ being in secular venues – they are backing up Wynonne during her Christmas tour and then doing some SGM while Wyonne changes outfits so great way to get some of God’s love through music to some that might never hear the message.
