Daniel Childs leaves Blackwood Gospel Quartet

Posted in: Changes — Daniel J. Mount @ 6:28 am

The Blackwood Gospel quartet announced yesterday that group manager Mark Blackwood’s nephew, Daniel Childs, will be coming off the road. They said:

We regret to announce that Daniel, our tenor singer, has decided to leave life on the road due to health reasons. With the uncle/nephew relationship between Mark and Daniel, parting wasn’t easy. There was always the possibility of him carrying the Blackwood heritage into the next generation, and that possibility was just beginning to flourish. It’s true that Daniel’s heart has always been in music, but his passion is in church worship, rather than quartet music.

Paul Lancaster will fill in while they seek for a new tenor.

While one should never say never, Childs was the only fourth-generation Blackwood on the road, and (as the press release mentioned) was the one most likely to carry on the Blackwood heritage into the next generation.

That is too bad, but I also find the reason for him leaving confusing…is health reasons, or that his heart wasn’t in it?

That’s 100% true. Paul Lancaster is an amazing vocalist and extremely versatile. Gospel music, and it’s groups, are luck to have someone like him in the industry.

As for the confusion concerning Daniel’s leaving the group. He is currently seeing a doctor. I traveled with him every weekend and found that he has always had a strong desire to work with the youth in church worship. He knew the desire and need for the Blackwood heritage to carry on and he wants to see that happen. However, his heart is elsewhere. The departure most likely would have happened sooner or later. The health issues he’s been dealing with just escalated his departure.

Paul Lancaster is the best kept secret in gospel music. No one really knows what makes him prefer fill-ins. He must have another gig somewhere. He has done a great job whatever group he has sung with, however the Mullins with their tight harmoney is still my favorite.

DANIEL LEAVING IS SAD TO ME, BUT THERE ARE 4 MORE IN THAT GENERATION THAT CAN CARRY ON THE LEGACY. THIS IS JUST MARK’S LINEAGE. THE GENERATION FOLLOWING THAT ALREADY HAS 4 BOYS IN IT.
MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS ALL GOSPEL SINGERS AND KEEP THEM SAFE AS THEY TRAVEL.
