Randy Crawford returns to Assurance

Posted in: Changes — Daniel J. Mount @ 5:31 am

Brian Free & Assurance lost their baritone singer recently when Derrick Selph announced his departure. A familiar face will be returning; Randy Crawford, who has also performed with the Toney Brothers and with the Carolina Boys / Kingsmen, will be their new baritone singer. During his earlier stint with Brian Free & Assurance, Crawford sang with the group on hit songs such as “Who Is This King” and “What A Difference A Day Makes.” His first official concert will be on July 16th in Jackson, Tennessee.

I’m so happy to see him back. I saw him when he was with the Carolina Boys, then before that when he was with BF&A the first time. It will be good to have him back.

Poor ol Terry Toney. He jus did a photo session and a new CD with Randy who had only been with him for 5 months. Of course poor ol Brian Free had just released a new CD and then Derrick resigned. You gotta love how these quartet men work, LOL.

Is Randy the one who sang “Justified” on the “GoodNews” project with the Carolina Boys??? If so He is a great fit with BFA… that song is my favorite off of that project…

Why did he leave the first time?

Brian disbanded the group to go solo.

I want to think the baritone (Jon McBroome) was planning on leaving and Brian decided he was tired of all personnel changes so he disbanded. Brian was also working on being ordained during his time as a soloist.

Its interesting, because Randy Crawford sang Lead with BFA before, NOT baritone. His voice is more like Bill Shiver’s range.

Kind of like Bryan Hutson with the Kingsmen.

Is Brian Free ordained, then? (I can’t tell from #6 whether it actually happened or not.)

Yes, Brian is an ordained minister.

Randy’s voice should fit fine because Brian’s voice is so high that the lead is tenor and the baritone is lead on many songs. The tenor is, well, the reason Brian holds the record as the most awarded tenor in gospel music history.

#6 if memory serves correctly, Randy was the one leaving and not McBroom.

Great move by Brian Free to bring back Randy. He has a great voice and a winning smile to boot.
