A Complete Cathedrals Collection

Today, a copy I ordered of the Cathedrals’ Smooth as Silk project came in.

This completed a five-year project to find copies of all of the Cathedrals’ recordings (including the two Cathedral Trio projects). Though I picked up a number along the way, I didn’t even try to find a complete set of the nearly innumerable compilations, since they would just take up space I don’t have.

A big thank you to everyone who helped me track down copies, especially to Dean Adkins, who got me going. I had already found a couple of CDs, but when I purchased a dozen or so duplicates from him, that convinced me that this project was actually possible.

Now, on to my next major collecting project: Tracking down all the recordings that key Cathedrals personnel (at least Younce, Payne, Trammell, Bennett, Wolfe, Funderburk, Haase, and Fowler) made before and after their Cathedrals years. I am pretty close on a few, but there is enough left to go to keep me busy for the next few years.

  1. Congratulations, Daniel!

I don’t know how many years I worked to complete my Gold City collection, but it was well worth it when I finished.

My hat’s off to you. You had a lot more years to cover with the Cats than I did with Gold City, although I added extra difficulty to my task by tracking down all of their guest appearances through the years.

Again, congratulations and good luck on your project!

  2. I do collect as many guest appearances as I can, though these are generally (especially with Homecoming appearances) songs with the same track / arrangement they used on the main recordings.

It was a challenge, but a good one! :)

I’ve got a solo LP by Danny Funderburk from around 1985, called “Whiter Than Snow,” that was recorded in Cincinnati, produced by Roger Bennett for Journey Records, I believe. Was still in the shrink wrap at NQC one year. Never have had a chance to listen to it yet, but it’s autographed by Danny.

I think you saved one of their best recordings for last! I thought Steve Lee was one of the finest baritones the Cats ever had, and the projects with Lee and Talley were some of their finest.

Congrats Daniel! That is an awesome collection! I envy you. :) We share the Catherals as our all time favorite group (along with many other people I am sure). I have 32 CDs in my Cathedrals collection, but I haven’t gotten into the LP collecting (not yet anyway).

Did you happen to get the album the Weatherfords recorded with RCA studios with “Child of the King” on it? I think it was called In the Garden, but I’m not sure I have all my facts straight.

I’ve seen it going on Ebay before for a lotta money.

  7. John says:

“In the Garden” is one of the finest albums in gospel music history. However, it doesn’t contain “Child of the King”.

  8. Amy Rogers says:

OK. Whatever the album was, I think the story in the Cats’ biography was that Elvis complemented Glen Payne on it at the NQC. But I do not know, to be honest …………..
