Gaither Vocal Band takes home a Grammy

Posted in: Awards — Daniel J. Mount @ 7:46 am

The Gaither Vocal Band took home a Grammy Award at last night’s 51st Annual Grammy Awards. Lovin’ Life won the Grammy for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album.

Unless I am missing one, by my count this is Gaither’s 6th Grammy Award.

  1. 1974 – Best Inspirational Performance – Let’s Just Praise the Lord (Bill Gaither Trio)
  2. 1976 – Best Inspirational Performance – Jesus, We Just Want to Thank You (Bill Gaither Trio)
  3. 1992 – Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album – Homecoming (Gaither Vocal Band)
  4. 2000 – Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album -Kennedy Center Homecoming
  5. 2002 – Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album – Billy Graham Music Homecoming
  6. 2009 – Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album - Lovin’ Life (Gaither Vocal Band)

Quite interestingly, for all the album’s detractors, it’s only the second GVB album to take home a Grammy when put up against the best of country and bluegrass Gospel. And given the choir tracks and guest vocals on some of Homecoming, it could almost be said to be the first regular GVB project to take home the award.

Wow, that’s great! I was not home last night to see the Grammy’s. Were they there to accept it?

I was with you, Daniel, I could only come up with six. However, this was on the Gaither.com news article about the Grammy win:

“Bill Gaither, the Gaither Vocal Band and the Bill Gaither Trio have now collectively received eight GRAMMY ® Awards since the first win in 1973.”

    Meagan,
I don’t believe that particular category is presented during the television broadcast.

Thankfully, Guy & Marsh have gotten some well-deserved praise for ‘their’ efforts. All the best is wished for them. Miss them already. :( Congrats!

I have a question. Completely out of left field, I might add, but here it is. Does anyone know the staut of Palmetto State? According to wikipedia, Larry Strickland and Jeremy Calloway have both left. I haven’t heard any official news about them. I ask because I have always been an avid fan and have enjoyed them very much in the last few years. Thanks!
    (Sorry its way off topic).

Gaithergirl, I agree that they were the best GVB ever and I find it pretty cool that as Daniel pointed out, this could be the first Gaither Grammy that was just the vocal band. Congrats to Guy, Wes and Marsh. Makes me think of the old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Daniel or anyone, do you know if Guy Penrod has given any interviews? Sure would like to hear his take on all the speculation about ‘him’, etc. Thanks
