Southern Gospel News Roundup

Posted in: Saturday News Roundup — Daniel J. Mount @ 8:32 am

There were enough different stories out this morning that I decided to put them all in one post.

First off is Eric Phillips, tenor for the Mark Trammell Trio. He had an emergency appendectomy last weekend. I believe Nic Holland filled in for him last week. It was expected that he would be back on the road this weekend. However, he had some complications, and although the doctor expects him to recover shortly, he was in no condition to come out on the road for this weekend. Diana Brantley wrote a report on last night’s concert; at this concert, Eric’s father, former Kingsmen tenor Ernie Phillips, filled in and apparently did an excellent job.

Yesterday, I posted a story about Kenny Bishop’s Grammy nomination. Doug Harrison at the Averyfineline blog has posted some extended musings on the story. I don’t agree with everything he says, or with the way he puts it, but it is undeniably an interesting read.

Finally, Martin Roth caught a story I missed on Guy Penrod filling in for Gloria Gaither at a singing engagement…though Penrod had such a bad case of laryngitis that he only sang one song.

I did hear the other night that Earnie Phillips was about to retire from his job at the VA Hospital. If that is true, just maybe he will go back to a fulltime group. I do know he has been singing with a part time group all along. I sure hope we see him around more. He is one of the great tennors of all times in my opinion.
