Signature Sound unveils cover art

This album cover art will raise a few eyebrows. Southern Gospel has never seen an album cover quite like this one.
But let’s put that aside for a moment. You can’t judge a CD by its cover, and the track listings promise some classic quartet singing. “Lovest Thou Me” and “Someday” are classic quartet songs, and the new single, “John in the Jordan,” is in the traditional-with-a-twist style that Signature Sound defines.
So perhaps this album cover is, in a sense, a microcosm of the Southern Gospel phenemonon that is Signature Sound–a traditional quartet in contemporary packaging.

Why exactly is the artwork so controversial again? I mean – it’s just a picture of the guys on a stage singing – countless other live recordings have done this as well.

Compare it to Blackwood Brothers, Statesmen, Kingsmen, and Cathedrals album covers over the last fifty years. It looks like none of them. I’m not saying that is a bad thing; I sort of like it, even though it looks completely different from everything I am used to.

I agree with Chris on this. I don’t see why it should be controversial. I went back and looked at it again thinking I had missed something. I think it is a great cover that matches with the enthusiam that is EH&SS.

Your points are well put, but I’m still having a difficult time imagining a Legacy Five or Perrys album cover looking like that.
It’s not bad, and I didn’t say that it was bad. But it is different.

I”ve seen Kingsmen, Statesmen, etc LP covers that aren’t that different than SSQ — saying “will raise a few eyebrows–and that’s putting it mildly.” — is a stretch (in my opinion) or looking for controversy wher eno exists….and I’m not a SSQ fan.

All right. I must have been mistaken. For some reason, when I looked at the cover, I thought it was a total departure from everything they had done before. I was not trying to stir up controversy.
Perhaps my eyes rested most on the cover of the family album, within the three items in the picture.

I think it will stand out on the shelf with that design. It is a bold look…however, I tend to agree with the others that it isn’t necessarily a cover that would “raise eyebrows.”

Ever seen the cover for “The Bible Told Me So” by the Statesmen? “Statesmen Quartet Sings With Hovie Lister”? “Paradise Island” by the Blackwood Brothers?
And how many more times is Ernie going to record “OWAS”? Sheesh! That’s reason enough for me to leave that CD on the shelf.

I’ve seen the cover for Paradise Island. It is in faded pastels, not bold or dashing colors. I’ve probably seen the covers for the two Statesmen albums, but they don’t really stand out in my mind.
As far as Ernie recording “Oh What a Savior”–he did that live on the video. He does it at every EHSS concert, since it is his “signature song.” (Note I’m not denying that it is also the signature song for other tenors, since it is; but it is Ernie’s signature song.) But although I have not seen the song list for the CD yet, I suspect that this is on the video only and the CD is composed of other songs.

I think the cover is very marketable and makes the product stand out when placed next to secular products … it IS something that will raise eyebrows.

Yes, it should stand out, and that is a good thing. The more people (SG fans and others) who buy it, the better. (Not only for Sig Sound, but also for all of Southern Gospel…they are ambassadors for our genre, to a new generation.)
